Project Aware - Finathon

About this image

Whangarei Fritter Festival

Sorry, this event has been and gone.

We are holding a Finathon from 10am-1pm on February 17th 2018 at Matapouri Beach.

A Finathon is an event that raises awareness about current issues facing our oceans. At the forefront - marine debris and overfishing, especially of sharks.

While this event is a fundraiser for Project Aware, it is more about getting the community together to be a part of the change toward healthier oceans. From paddling to sandcastle making we aim to make this a fun way of spreading awareness about current issues facing our ocean.

The charity that we are collaborating with is Project Aware. You can check them out here:

We are holding two events on Saturday morning (10th Feb) and a BBQ after. Participants are encouraged to donate $5 toward the efforts of Project Aware to enter and eat.

10:00am - Sandcastle competition 11:00am - SUP fun race (hire a board for an extra donation) 12:00pm - BBQ lunch and prize giving

We have heaps of prizes to give away for the competition winners, as well as, spot prizes and a prize draw for everyone that enters. Prizes include a trip for 2 to the Poor Knights Islands, SUP Bro Paddleboarding vouchers, mask/snorkel package, double pass to the fritter festival, books, t-shirts, meal vouchers and more!

We will have Tutukaka Roast doing coffee and Lickety Split doing icecream!

We have also set up a FINathon fundraising page where we will deposit the money that has been raised. This page also has more info specifically about the FINathon:

You can also create a personal finathon fundraising page for you or your kids and get sponsorship for the event day. Once you have done that you can join our them. Let us know if you would like to do this and I can send you some more info -

This will be the fourth year running that we have been advocating for this cause. As avid divers, SUPers and kitesurfers, we live for the ocean. Being part of Project Aware’s global community empowers us to be a part of the change toward healthier oceans.

Here is also a quick video of our last sandcastle competition which has inspired our upcoming event:

With your support you can help Project Aware to: - Fight to stop the ugly journey of our trash - Insist on full protections for the most vulnerable shark and ray species - Negotiate strong policies to ensure a brighter future for our ocean and its wildlife

Ocean protection depends on all of us! Now, more than ever before, it time to take a stand for ocean conservation.
