triggering adjective (especially of something read, seen, or heard) causing someone emotional distress, typically as a result of arousing feelings or memories associated with a particularly traumatic experience.

Centre-right comic, Alexander Sparrow, is over it. His critically-acclaimed shows – works that take an in-depth look at the likes of Donald Trump, The Marquis de Sade, and pick up artists – are being turned down by theatres. But why?

The programme manager at Basement Theatre, Auckland, says of DJ Trump: “our fear in programming this work at Basement is that the intended irony/humour has the danger of getting lost in performance”.

While the programme manager at BATS Theatre, Wellington, says: “I personally would not feel comfortable putting on a show that gives him any more attention”.

In short, Alexander’s words are deemed so powerful, that audiences cannot possibly make it through an hour with him without being converted. That sounds like a challenge to both the left and right.

Are you triggered by the mention of anything you disagree with? Are certain topics off limit in conversation with you? Have you been silenced because you voiced a non-status quo opinion? Are you tired of being told what you can and can’t say?

Then join Alexander for an hour of top-tier stand-up comedy. It’s time to ask yourself the hard questions. This is a show you can’t afford to miss.

Sick of a world triggered by almost anything, Alexander has become Trigger Happy.
