School Holidays

About this image

Whangarei Fritter Festival

School holidays are always fun at Kiwi North with extra activities happening. Something for every member and generation of the family all in one very special place.

In the Kiwi House our 2 North Island Brown kiwi are waiting to show everyone their very cool natural environment where we turn day into night. Although they have live food living in their enclosure all the time they are also fed 3 times per day at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

These feeding times are always accompanied with a talk by the keeper who will tell you all about these unique creatures and answer all your questions.

3 times per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday after 11am kiwi feeding the keeper will bring Flash the tuatara out for a closeup encounter with all the visitors. This is a great opportunity to learn why these living dinosaurs are so very special and to get amazing photos.

In the Museum galleries we have fascinating social and natural history displays, including our Matariki 2018 (Maori New Year) "Puanga - star of the New Year, star of abundance" exhibition.

One of our special stories tells of the discovery of a cave with several Moa skeleton right here on the edge of Whangarei city. These remains, including a complete skeleton, are now on display in the main museum gallery.

Seniors' Winter Special - to brighten the winter we offer half price entry to all seniors, local, New Zealanders or visitors from overseas. So only $7.50 instead of $15.00.

Ideal for all those grandparents spending time with grandchildren these holidays.

The Kiwi North education officer some specific activities for 5 to 14 years old, 10am to 12pm, 9th to 13th July. See our website What's On for details. Bookings are necessary, $5.00 per child and they must be accompanied by an adult who is free.

Out on the Heritage Park the historic buildings are all open for viewing, including the 1886 Clarke Homestead, the original house on the property. The big train will be running Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 10am to 2pm, with the mini trains only operating on Wednesdays 10.30 to 2pm.

We are here every day 10am to 4pm, rain or shine. Come and meet the Kiwi North team and let them share this very special place with you.

About this Venue

Visit the nocturnal Kiwi House and see the resident kiwi foraging for food as they would in the wild. Learn about Kiwi conservation or see if you can spot one of our native geckos.

The Museum is home to nationally significant taonga (Maori treasure), early settler displays and changing exhibitions. The Clarke Homestead “Glorat” built in 1886 and lived in by the Clarke family until the 1980s is a museum in itself, displaying the family’s treasures through the generations.

Other heritage buildings on site include the first Women’s Jail, Jane Mander’s Study, Oruaiti Chapel (made from a single Kauri log and believed to be New Zealand’s smallest church) and Riponui Pah School House.

Set aside several hours, bring a picnic and take in the grounds of Heritage Park.

Home to regular “Live Days” where you will see the Park come to life! – The Heritage Park Clubs open their doors to the public revealing displays of vintage farm machinery, stationary engines, and vintage cars. Novelty rides include miniature and full-sized trains, bullocks, miniature ponies and vintage tractors. Food stalls, face painting and an eclectic mix of family fun activities provide that festive flavour.

Park over property for NZ Motor Caravan Association members.

Bush walks and waterfall.

You will find Gate 1, Kiwi North only 6.2 ks from the Hub, Town Basin, Whangarei.
