Whangarei Fritter Festival

Sorry, this event has been and gone.

My initial interest in Africa began in the mid nineties with the BBC television documentary series “Big Cat Diary,” co-hosted by a Zoologist named Johnathan Scott, a wildlife photographer and author. The series was based in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and was so successful it screened for around a decade.

In 2012, I travelled to Kenya - the “Masai Mara” and Tanzania - the Serengeti for 21 days.

Again in 2014, I visited Botswana to the Mashatu Game Reserve in the south - east, bordering South Africa and Zimbabwe. Then onto the Okavango Delta in the north - west where the desert is flooded from the seasonal rains from the Angola highlands in the north. The rains form an inland delta, (the only inland delta in the world), that evaporates somewhat, but not entirely, during the dry season.

My third trip in 2017, again to the Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana, the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, and South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. This trip was with a team of Pretoria based professionals that specialized in guided tours for enthusiast photographers.

And by the way – our guest professional photographer in “the Mara” was none other than Johnathan Scott, co host from the BBC “Big Cat Diary” series. The same guy who sowed the “Africa seed” in my head all those years ago.

The result of my three trips to Africa, and our wanderings around New Zealand are what you see at this exhibition today.

Enjoy, Ian Butt
