Whangārei's mild, subtropical climate means you can enjoy our District's stunning coastal, rural and urban environment all year round – it doesn't snow here!

Whangārei is an accredited Motorhome Friendly Town and we welcome responsible campers.

There are different rules and camping locations for people staying in tents, vehicles, or certified self-contained vehicles. Check the Whangarei District Council Freedom camping page for up-to-date information about where and how long you can camp along with useful tips and current notifications. Public and other dump station locations can be found on the Public Toilet map.

Department of Conservation campsites (DOC) in the Whangārei district are located in superb seaside locations. Buy the weekly campsite pass when you hire your campervan and you could save up to 50% on campsite fees at many of DOC's campsites. If you are a member of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA), you can purchase a DOC/NZMCA campsite pass which provides additional benefits.
